Five gorgeous Upstate New York properties
Small hotels and chic getaways in the Catskills and the Hudson Valley
by Patrick Janelle
During the midst of the pandemic, with long-distance travel out of the question, I took the opportunity to explore escapes that are in driving distance from New York City. I’ve rounded up five properties across the Catskills, Hudson Valley, and beyond that are great for a weekend jaunt and male the perfect destination for both a sunny summer trip or a cozy winter getaway.
With sweeping views of Windham Mountain, Eastwind is a cozy Scandinavian retreat in the Catskills. Chicly minimalist accommodations include wooden a-frame and cylindrical cabins, as well as guest rooms outfitted with Turkish rugs and Faribault wool blankets.
2. Hasbrouck House
A romantic hotel set in an 18th-century, Dutch Colonial, stone mansion, Hasbrouck House is the ultimate couples getaway. Located in the historic hamlet of Stone Ridge, the lush property encompasses 25 bedrooms, a farm-to-table restaurant, a landmark pool, and a private lake.
3. Hotel Kinsley
A collection of four distinct, 19th century buildings makes up the single, boutique Hotel Kinsley in Kingston. The area’s renowned art and nature inform the design, while seasonal ingredients from local farmers determine what’s on the menu.
4. Kenoza Hall
In a restored 1880s boarding house, Kenoza Hall includes 22 guest rooms with Victorian decor, a Kneipp-inspired spa, and a restaurant rooted in the renaissance of continental fine dining. Private access to the property’s pool, lake, and hiking trails complete the offerings.
5. Starlite Motel
The heart of the Borscht Belt is home to the Starlite Motel, a 1960s roadside mainstay that has been recently revamped for modern guests. Original mid-century charm remains, while contemporary amenities have been added, like organic bath products, WiFi, a saltwater pool, and fire pits.
