When I was 16 years old, I spent some incredibly formative months in The District as a page in the House of Representatives. It was the first place I was able to live like an adult—even though I was basically still a child. I was working a full-time job and staying in a college-style dorm with 70 other teenagers: a very grown-up experience for a bunch of juniors in high school. Working every day, I had a bit of disposable income, so I dabbled with dining out. I didn’t know a ton about restaurants—my exposure to the scene was limited to the global destinations section of Wallpaper Magazine—but I was aware that the hospitality offerings left something to be desired. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case. Like many American cities, D.C. has grown in countless ways over the past few decades. Yes, it’s still the political center of the U.S., but its food scene is now much more vibrant, thanks in large part to flourishing immigrant communities. The compelling cuisines that used to be limited to the Adams Morgan neighborhood are now found across the city My last trip to D.C. included delicious visits to Bad Saint, an acclaimed Filipino restaurant, and Tail Up Goat, a Caribbean-inspired spot with one Michelin star. This time, I’m aiming to try Dauphine’s, Anju, Albi, and Café Riggs, located in the hotel where I’ll be staying. With all of these promising destinations on my hit list, I’m optimistic that D.C. continues to strengthen its hospitality game. Be sure to follow along on Instagram as I report back my findings.
