Riviera Style

What to wear on the Côte d'Azur

By Patrick Janelle

Sparkling seas, bronzing sun, warm breezes, and cold apéritifs: whether in Portofino, Monaco, or Saint Tropez, those simple moments define life on the Riviera. Style in this casual-yet-chic corner of the world requires an effortless flow from days lazing on sun-drenched beaches to laidback evenings sipping apéritifs with good company and even better fromage or salumi. While one hidden cove will have you reaching for espadrilles and a swimsuit, that afternoon’s café will have you sporting slacks and classic slip-ons. For many of us, the trip is a week-long affair, which requires a tight edit of clothing, foregoing the baggage carousel (which I always try to do) in favor of maximizing beach time. In any case, each time I find myself on this side of the Mediterranean coast, I pack just enough to keep my joie de vivre while living la dolce vita.
