Must-have items for brunching at home

From favorite sauces to the chicest dishes, these items elevate breakfast to brunch

by Patrick Janelle

In this new normal, weekend mornings have become a time for moving brunch from my favorite New York hotspots to my own SoHo apartment—often outside on my fire escape. To share this ritual with you all, I’ve gathered my recent go-to items for those early weekend hours thoughtful and relaxing, too.

Breakfast: The Cookbook by Emily Elyse Miller

Any time I have a hankering for a brand new morning recipe, I consult this collection from the queen of breakfast herself, my friend Emily Elyse Miller. Dishes range from sweet to savory, so whether I want to try my hand at Chinese pineapple buns or Mexican chilaquiles, I know where to turn.

Frama Otto Bowl

I’m particularly partial to the unconventional, shallow shape of this Scandinavian ceramic bowl for eating my cereal. Made of stoneware handcrafted in Copenhagen, the piece is dishwasher-safe and stackable, so it takes up minimal space in my tight kitchen.

New York Shuk Rosey Harissa Spice

Morning cocktails are a brunch necessity for me and a Bloody Mary always hits the right notes. Of course, a classic version is good, but a dressed-up one is better. I use this floral, aromatic harissa spice made of rose petals and sun-dried chili peppers to add intriguing flavor and a bit of heat.

Soho Home Roebling Cut Highball Glass

When I’m sipping on the aforementioned Bloody Mary, I like to do it in style. For me, a cocktail always tastes better in a proper glass. Named for Brooklyn Bridge designer John Augustus Roebling, this crystal highball has stunning straight line cuts as a nod to the cables on the bridge.

Tata Harper Clarifying Face Mask

While eating and drinking are major components of my tranquil weekend morning, skincare rounds out the self-care element of the routine. I love to layer my face with this tingly mask, which is filled with salicylic acid and lactic acid to exfoliate and restore. The green, honey-like fragrance is a welcome scent.
