At Home in SoHo

On rearranging my space and my new furniture obsession, Maiden Home.

By Patrick Janelle

A week rarely goes by when I’m not rearranging my apartment. That could mean moving around a couple tables and a chair or simply swapping out the artwork on the walls. Or it could mean buying brand new furniture and changing the configuration of the living room in one fell swoop. And that’s what happened recently in my 500-square-foot SoHo apartment.

Ready for some new living room pieces, I turned to the Maiden Home. I selected The Irving sofa, upholstered in granite wool, which offers a classic, clean silhouette. I also picked up the stock version of The Hayes with a beechwood frame and a slinky, low-slung cowhide seat.

Maiden Home, founded in 2015 by Nidhi Kapur, is a direct-to-consumer brand that makes custom furniture in North Carolina factories that are known for superior craftsmanship. Nidhi founded the company when she couldn’t find quality furniture that matched her aesthetics—and budget—when redoing her own home in NYC. The current lineup features a tightly-curated range of sofa and chair templates that you can tailor to your liking, from wood and varnish finishes to leather and fabric upholstery. And like many new startup consumer brands, cutting out the middleman means bringing the price point down on custom pieces without sacrificing quality. The result is beautiful, functional furniture that is as solid as it is pretty. And the best part: it’s extremely comfortable, too.
